Virginia General Assembly & VAASL Advocacy

The Virginia General Assembly session is one of the shortest legislative seasons in the nation—which makes timely advocacy essential. During this fast-moving window, bills that impact school libraries, students, and educators can advance quickly, for better or for worse. VAASL works to ensure that the voices of school librarians are heard at every step.

The General Assembly convenes on the second Wednesday in January. Sessions last 30 days in odd-numbered years and 60 days in even-numbered years, with the option to extend an additional 30 days.

Your role matters.  VAASL members and supporters are encouraged to:

  • Stay informed on education-related legislation

  • Contact legislators about issues affecting school libraries

  • Use advocacy tools to take action when it matters most
